David graduated in law from Queen’s University Belfast in 1983. While at Queen’s he obtained a Royal Wedding Travel Award to do research in America on emerging laws.
After graduation and further travels he attended the Institute of Professional Legal Studies and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 1985, joining Culbert & Martin Solicitors the same year. He became a partner there in the early 1990s and then senior partner in 1998, dealing with a wide range of work including many equality and discrimination cases.
Following Culbert & Martin's merger with C&J Black in 2019 he joined them as a consultant. He now deals mainly with conveyancing, wills and probates, leases and advice matters. He also sits as a part-time legal member chairing certain Tribunals. Outside work he also served for several years on both the General Consumer Council and NI Disability Council.
